10 Years of Building Capacity for Peace in Africa

Dr. Jean-Bosco Butera's Farewell Ceremony

On 15 November 2014, UPEACE Africa Programme staff members organized a farewell ceremony for Dr. Jean-Bosco Butera, former Director of UPEACE Africa Programme. Dr. Butera is founding director of the Programme and led it to be one of the leading institutions that focus on building Africa’s teaching, training and research capacity in the areas of peace, conflict, security and governance. Over the last ten years, the Africa Programme has trained close to one thousand (1,000) faculty from various universities in Africa, researchers, members of civil society organisations and policy makers.

During his tenure as Director, he also taught at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies, Addis Ababa University and in Dakar, Senegal on the Master’s degree in Gender and Peace building, a joint degree offered by UPEACE and Cheilkh Anta Diop Universuty in partnership with Femmes Africa Solidarite.

Dr Butera is currenty seconded by the UN Women as Special Advisor and Head of Office to the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
